About Me

Babble.com's Top 50 Dad Blogs of 2011!I'm a 32-year-old father and husband born and bred in Massachusetts. I have a beautiful son named Will, a gorgeous wife named MJ who is far too hot to have married me, a dog I love and two cats I put up with. I'm a smart-ass former newspaper reporter with a penchant for turning a phrase, who decided to go corporate and is now enjoying life as a content manager for a website.

This blog is not just another "daddy blog." Sure I write about my son, but these pages are a record of my life. I don't just highlight the fun milestones like first steps, I also chronicle the "other stuff." The fights, the torment and the doubt that inevitably come with being a husband and father. It's not always puppy dogs and rainbows, but it is very real. And often there is beauty in the sadness, redemption in the struggle.

Thank you for checking me out, giving me a try and sticking around for the journey. If you'd like to contact me you can email aaron_gouveia (at) yahoo (dot) com.

South Beach Update

So I’ve finished my two weeks of hell the South Beach Diet’s Phase I and I’m slightly disappointed.

I lost 7 lbs in two weeks. I was pretty good about sticking closely to the diet, but I did cheat twice. I had half a small cup of ice cream and one small pizza with breadsticks. But I don’t think that’s straying too far. Otherwise I ate rolled up turkey and roast beef, celery sticks with Laughing Cow cheese, mozzarella string cheese, nuts, and lots of lean chicken, beef and fish. Granted I didn’t get to go to the gym or work out at all, so I guess 7 lbs in two weeks is OK.

That puts me at 224 lbs, meaning I’ve lost 12 lbs total since I started this whole weight loss thing a few months ago. Hardly impressive, I know.

But now I’m entering Phase II of the diet which looks tricky. I can incorporate whole grain bread back into my diet and along with a little bit of whole wheat pasta and some wine, but I think I’m going to stick a little more closely with Phase I for awhile. After all, I’ve only got 3 weeks until I turn 30. While I’m not going to reach my original goal of losing 30 lbs, I’m hoping I might be able to scratch and claw to hit 20 lbs lost. But we’ll see.

Either way my pants aren’t as tight around the waste, my man boobs have receded slightly and I’m feeling better in general. More energy and I’m not craving junk food all the time (just some of the time). I wish I had started this at the outset instead of so close to my birthday.

Have a good rest of the weekend everybody.

Don’t get discouraged. There will be a period of time where you feel like you are dormant. BUT DON’T GIVE UP! This is just your body doing a ‘head game’ on you and before you know it, one morning you’ll wake up and boom! those pounds will be flying off. So keep plugging on Daddy Files :) you will be happy you did.

  • Seven pounds in two weeks is great! Weight loss and changing the way one eats is a very hard thing to do. I know. I’ve been trying to lose weight on and off since I’ve had my first child. It’s so hard to give things up, even though you know it’s good for you. And the fact that your body rebels (headaches, stomachaches, dizziness, etc.,) isn’t fun either. It’s like your body is against you!
I wish you all the success in the world. Keep going. I’m cheering you on!

  • I think you are doing pretty damn awesome! And like you said, you pants are less tight… often you are losing inches and pounds. I don’t know about you but I’d rather lose inches ANY DAY!

  • GG: Depends on what kind of inches we’re talking about! ;-)

Aaron, it is soooo hard not to cheat, BUT, if you can push yourself, you will be rewarded. Cheating does a few things: 1. It makes you mentally allow yourself to do it again and 2. (this is the important one) The way South Beach works has to do with Ketosis and when you cheat you don’t stay in Ketosis and you really won’t lose as much and your body will crave more carbs.

I promise the longer you go without cheating, the easier it gets. Did you check out the George Stella cookbooks? Lots of recipes for food that will satisfy cravings such as sweets and something crunchy, without cheating.

I think you have motivated me to do it again. It is a commitment so I am not sure yet, but I think so…. LOL!

  • I would KILL to lose 7 pounds in 2 weeks. That’s impressive. Stay with it. You’re doing great.
